Faculty Interview – Jessica Ann Best, Camp VOICE Director

Nov 16, 2018

Jessica Ann Best, mezzo soprano

What was your first experience with opera?

I’ve been singing classical music since I was little girl at the Eastman School of Music. I was in a children’s’ choir there called The Eastman Bach Children’s’ Chorus. We performed many pieces from opera in a choral setting; mostly Mozart, Bizet and Handel. I also come from a musical family; so it has been played in my home since before the time I was born!

What is your favorite part about being a faculty member for VOICExperience?

I adore working with our students AND I adore connecting with our other faculty, many of whom have trained and continue to train and mentor me! It’s incredible to walk down the hall and have access to the top people in my craft-in the world. We also have a lot of fun together!

Why should artists participate in summer programs like VOICExperience?

VOICExperience has given me a home to define and refine my craft with the best people in the world. It broadens your horizons and opens you up to opportunities you can only receive from this faculty and this unique combination of people. As faculty, we love training and working on our craft with singers at all levels. It invigorates us-and I believe this same passion is passed on to each singer.

Why do you working with singers?

Music is the most wonderful thing on earth (if you can even hold it to the earth.) What a better way to spend your life than doing what you love with people you love? It’s amazing to take music from the past and present and create it today. It’s a joy to bring music to an audience and experience it with them-in a moment you will never get back. It is thrilling to introduce a piece of music to a student and watch their life change. This is a life-changing occupation. It’s a life of loving your work!
