The artists journey isn’t an easy one in the best time. While singers ask themselves, “now what?”, VOICExperience offers a week-long series of workshops that addresses these issues head on. From therapeutic methods to practical processes, these sessions help prepare you for the re-opening of opportunities and adjusting to the new normal.

Sessions will be primarily live Zoom Workshops that will be recorded for access anytime for the participant to watch until April 1.

VOICExperience has announced that the non-profit organization’s annual gala will take place via its web-based streaming service at 7 p.m. on March 25, 2021.

The fundraiser will be hosted by legendary baritone and VOICE Co-Founder, Sherrill Milnes and will take place online to protect the health and safety of singers and patrons. The gala will include special guest appearances by Thomas Hampson, Mark Delavan, Denyce Graves, James Morris, Fabrizio Melano and Frederica von Stade.

The gala will feature performances by VOICE Program alumni including Santiago Ballerini, Jessica Ann Best, Emily Yocum Black, Angela De Venuto, Mariano Gladić, Lauren Jelencovich, Peter Lake, Liz Lang, Paulo Lapa, Meechot Marrero, Tiago Matos, Chad Sonka, Jonathan Walker-VanKuren, Melanie Spector and Hanna Atsedewoin.

During the gala, renowned baritone, Thomas Hampson, will be presented with the prestigious 2021 Milnes VOICE Award. Thomas Hampson, America’s foremost baritone, hails from Spokane, Washington. He has received many honors and awards for his probing artistry and cultural leadership. He enjoys a singular international career as an opera singer, recording artist, and “ambassador of song,” maintaining an active interest in research, education, musical outreach, and technology. Comprising more than 150 albums, his discography includes winners of a Grammy Award, five Edison Awards, and the Grand Prix du Disque. Through the Hampsong Foundation which he founded in 2003 he employs the art of song to promote intercultural dialogue and understanding.

For the Concerto competition, an honorable mention went to soprano Miranda Graham. In the Giffin competition, bass-baritone Adam Benton placed first among 11 contestants. Mezzo Ally Fahey placed second, with tenor Anthony Capizzi. Judges for the competition included Maria Zouves, Sherill Milnes, and Jeffrey Springer.

80 Artists from 15 states and 5 countries recorded nearly 20 hours of music, all recorded on artists’ devices in their socially distanced environments.

11 shows over the 2-week Festival garnered over 5,200 viewers from 38 states and 21 countries.

The Milnes VOICE Studio continued online with 31 artists for two weeks with over 500 hours of teaching and outreach!

The grand prize went to Andrew Payne, baritone, who won the Tom Lysaught scholarship, sponsored by Mary Lysaught, worth $3000 to study at the Milnes VOICE Studio this summer as part of the Savannah VOICE Festival. A Student of Northwestern University, he is been offered to sing Leporello in SVF’s production of Don Giovanni this summer.

The People’s Choice award, a $1000 tuition scholarship, funded by the Bernard and Sally Dobroski, was awarded to soprano Tiana Sorensen, a Northwestern graduate.

Joining Sherrill Milnes and Maria Zouves on the judging panel was Voice Faculty and alumni Joachim Schamberger and Kelli Morgan. Pianist Teresa Kang played the whole, livelyweekend.

Other contestants, tenor David Aurajo and baritone Bryan McClary wowed the audiences along with the winners, joining all for a weekend of workshops, coaching and the 11th annual event at the home of Joe and Patt Taylor. Joe’s art adorned the walls of thier Frank Lloyd Wright restoration home as the perfect backdrop to this home concert.

In its 20th anniversary, many VOICExperience alumni as well as past Idol winners joined the celebrations, singing and sharing memories of the program. Kelli Morgan, Simon Kyung Lee, Ola Rafalo, Ana Collado and Diana Stoic as well as the talented Idol artists came together for what became a Chicago based reunion! Lots of great music, great food and great fun!
